So after letting my commercial model Paratrooper stock sit idle for a few years I decided to finally do something to fix it's deficiencies. As probably everyone who has ever bought one knows, the folding mechanism has far too much slop which makes the stock annoying, so one ends up putting the action back into the standard stock.

Mil-spec stocks are exactly the same in all respects to the commercial model save for the following:

Mil-spec have a spacer sleeve that fits between the locking spring and hinge bolt and this sleeve extends through the lower stock arm to index into the lower lower hinge nut.

On the Mil-spec the lower hinge nut, lower hinge shell, and sling eyelet are all joined together

Believe it or not, this is the difference between a tightly locking stock with nearly zero slop or wobble, and one that flops back and forth when extended.

On the commercial stocks the lower hinge assembly is NOT an assembly but the individual parts. and the spacer sleeve is absent. It's as if someone somewhere said, "take out these parts so the commercially available stocks won't be a good as the mil-spec in order to keep mil-spec prices high..." I know, it does sound a bit conspiratorial, but honestly, I can't see any reason to have not included the sleeve or pinned the lower pieces together.

So as I said, my commerical stock started with a wobbly mechanism that no amount of tightening could fix other than to cause the lower hinge cap to crush into the grip wood, and make it nearly impossible to swing the stock.

Adding the spacer sleeve instantly removed 90% of the slop in the stock without having to be over-tightened. I used a length of 5/16"OD x 1/4"ID steel tube a little over an inch long - in this regard your sleeve length may vary.

To fix the slop between the lower hinge cap and lower hinge nut, I used a 3/16" drill and tap to thread the hinge cap in two places, then locked the two together using machine screws.

I added strips of blue tape to the wood stud projecting into the lower hinge cap (now lower hinge assembly), to remove play and create a compression layer between the steel and wood. I also replaced the standard wood screw the a screw made for a countersink, then placed a bevel on the lower hinge cap screw hole which acts to remove all movement of the cap without the need to overly tighten the retaining screw.

The result? Now the stock is rock solid whether open or closed. With the spacer length at 1.1" the hinge bolt can be snugged down into the lower hinge nut to bottom out the spacer sleeve in the nut recess. The lower stock arm is free to flex upward against locking spring pressure. The system can be adjusted by backing off the hinge bolt, but the proper way is to find the ideal spacer length which according to uscarbinecal30.com can vary by around 3/10ths of an inch. I basically settled on the shortest length which seems to work perfectly on my stock.
So now when the stock is folded, the lower hinge cap no longer torques around or slips fore-and-aft, and when folded, the hinge actually holds the stock snug against the side with the buttplate rotated parallel to the stock as originally designed.

I got inspired after re-watching a video by Jerry Miculek where he ran a new-manufacture Inland with Paratrooper stock through its paces and he swung that stock to and fro several times without once commenting on how loose and sloppy it was, which means the factory version must come with all the parts, properly connected.

Good work for sure. Hey maybe make up a kit for sale to people who have the reproduction stocks.
