I picked up a new to me IBM and need some help with identification. I am new to the M1 platform so please forgive me if I get something wrong or misname a part. I know this is most likely a rebuild but there are no import marks (that I know of). Here are the parts and markings that I could find. Any information or directions to sources would be appreciated. Thank you in advance
Receiver - I.B.M. Corp. 3701684 / U.S. Carbine Cal. 30M1 Bayonet Barrel Band - MMO Barrel - I.B.M. Corp. 12 43 (bomb cartouche) Front Sight - U Butt Plate - no visible markings anywhere Stock - no markings but pretty sure either refinished or aftermarket, looks nice though Handguard - no markings, close to matching the stock but I don't think its original to the stock Recoil plate - D.I. Hammer - W Trigger Housing - .U. (with the dots in the middle of the U) Mag Catch - M underlined Bolt (round type) - A.I. Charging handle - Y Trigger Guard - C Rear Sight (stamped type and staked on the right side) IRCC
That is all I could find. Is there any way to track the history of this carbine (well the receiver at least) Again thank you
Like you say, your carbine has probably gone through a rebuild. If it had the original stock we would probably see a stamp identifying the rebuild arsenal. The only thing in question is the marking on the operating slide. Can you post a picture? "Y" is not among the possible recognized markings. Maybe there is a mark on the interior the inertia block.
Unfortunately there are no surviving records that allow the tracking of individual carbines. It's all we can do to estimate the date of manufacture. In the case of I.B.M. it usually corresponded to within a few months of the date on the barrel. I.B.M.'s last shipments were in April of 1944.
