I just acquired a near correct '43 QHMC carbine (s/n 1,560,XXX) with three obvious problems.

1. Type 3 barrel band (Marked J.M.Q.)
2. Repro rear flip sight (Type 2/3 staking evident)
3. Oil hole in trigger housing (Type 3, marked Q-NL) looks parked

The stock is really nice (all the correct cartouches, stamps and dents). No arsenal rebuild marks. Barrel, receiver and bolt are nearly new looking. If I can find a decent Type 1 barrel band, I don't think the wear from the type 3 barrel band will show. Should I spring for the correct barrel band and rear sight or just leave it alone?

Oh, it shoots good, too. Would shoot better with a type 2 or 3 sight.

I'll try this. Still navigating the pictures thing. If this works, I'll take some better pics.

Nice! But that rear sight needs to go! Personally, I'd put an adjustable rear sight on it and call it done.

Thanks, jimb16. That's what I was thinking. BTW, did you see the oil hole on the trigger housing? I thought this was only on Winchester and Inland.

That is a post WWII rebuild characteristic. Many trigger housings had the oil hole drilled when they were rebuilt.

Boy someone tried to restore it. Even put a checkered safety on it. I would guess it's a reproduction like the rear sight.

Hey Tuna,

Boy, you've got good eyes. The checkered safety was originally on my Inland. The QHMC (SN 1560XXX) had a plain one. I knew a checkered safety wasn't right for the Inland so I switched them. I was concerned because I suspected the plain one was a repro. Would you have me put it back? Here's a close-up of each. What do you think? I'll take you word for it. I haven't seen that many safeties.
