Hello!

Name is texastomeh.

Looking forward to joining the forum and getting to know you guys. Hope that you will let me pick your brains.

I am retired from BOEING (defense side) and have always been a gun nut.

I recently came into possession of a UNIVERSAL Firearms (s/n: 17,xxx) M1 Carbine which I want to turn into a "Tactical Home Defense Weapon".

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't flame me because it is a UNIVERSAL and that I should get rid of it and buy something else! Just let me enjoy tinkering with this.

Thanx,

Tom

Hi Tom and welcome to the Carbine Forum from your neighbor in Southeast New Mexico!

A carbine is pretty much already a "Tactical Home Defense Weapon". You don't have to do much. Make sure it feeds SP okay. Some will shorten the barrel and replace the stock with a collapsible one. 30 round magazine and you are good to go. What did you have in mind?

With a 5-digit Universal, you've likely done well as far as Universals go. Most of the parts should be interchangeable with GI components and it may have some USGI parts in it, but like Jack already said...make sure it shoots and is as accurate as you are and most of your work is done.

An early Universal such as yours will be all USGI parts except the receiver but that is also set up as a USGI receiver was. It's the later generation Universals that are the problems. You should be able to set it up anyway you want to.

you can save a lot of ammo by putting a laser sight on it. ( No need to even shoulder the rifle. )

Leave it stock with it's adjustable sights as is because it's compact and bullet proof as designed. It doesn't need a lazer sight on it as it's not a precision platform. The GI spec is more like 'minute of coffee cup' at 50yds. Learn how to clean and lube it correctly and keep it that way.

Make sure you have good quality mags that are reliable. Keep them clean. If you want to use a 30rd mag, be sure you swap out your std mag release for an M-2 with the tang on it (simple swap) so it will function reliably. I've found the Korean GI mags available from You must be logged in to see this link. work very well.

Buy decent ammo (or better yet, start handloading) and learn to shoot it correctly. Become familure with it so it feels right at home in your hands. I've got an AR carbine, a Mini-14, and a M1 Carbine available for HD and the M1 Carbine is far and away my 1st choice.

Hi Tom, from a fellow Texan. I joined for the same reason you did and already learned a few tricks working on my carbine.
