I bought a M1 and its my first. I have some questions about the gun. The serial number is: 1,848,??3. That puts it with the 4,542 guns that was reworked. Above the serial# is SAG__S'G', the adjustable rear sight covers the middle section of the word. On the side of the sight, its stamped I.R.CO. The stock is walnut and has the I shape oiler channel. Inside the channel cutout theres a flaming bomb stamp and what looks likes a number 10 stamped. Behind the trigger guard there is a Box with a P in it, stamped. There is a number 6 on the other side, White ink stamped. Top section of wood has 4 revites, not 2. There is a bayinet mount on the barrel. Bayinet has a M M O stamped above the strap ring. There is a oiler with a IS on one end. The strap is green. Looks old. The barrel is stamped S A 10 49 below that is the cross cannon barrel stamp, and below that is a F. Theres still a faint green tint to the barrel. Its in great shape. I have fired one clip through it with no problems. The clip is after market had me worried about jamming up. Is this rare? Whats the history on it? What should I insurance it for, (replacement value cost)? Is it fake?

What you have is a Saginaw S'G' made carbine using the Irwin Pedersen serial numbers after S'G' took over the Irwin Pedersen plant in April 1943. Post war the carbine went through a rebuild and that is when the stock and hand guard was changed as well as the rear sight, barrel and barrel band. Most likely many of the internal parts were also changed. Not a fake or rare but a typical normal rebuilt carbine like 98% of all carbines are.
