I just purchased an alleged m1 bringback. If there is a way to post pics let me know. Ok here is all I know. 10-43 barrel stamp with bombs on it. No bayonet lug. Highwood stock. Walnut wood. There are no rack marks at all. Just a "w" inside the stock for winchester. It's never been sanded. Told it was from a tank. How to ad pics and need info please

Hi and welcome; Pics are not easy on this site.I hope you did not pay too much for the "STORY".
Look it over very close, do the parts match in color and wear?
Do the parts look new?
Is their marks stamped in slingwell?
Their are a lot of fake parts and stamps put on guns to make them look original and stories to thy and make them desireable and hi priced. BEWARE!
Ihope this helps GK

I appreciate the info. The gun has been in the family for 40 years. All numbers match and stamps too. There is only a "w" om the stock. No marks near oiler. Again I want to post pics I'd love to know how.

looks like you did well, stock has been replaced as it should have a UEF/GHD and cross cannons on it and should have M-U, P-U marking in slingwell-yours is a winchester stock

Stock was not replaced so I'm told. No cannons. No markings except the w.

wtmr is correct. The stock has been changed somewhere along the line. When it left the factory it did not have a Winchester stock on it. The hand guard is an Underwood hand guard but the stock is wrong.

Just saw expert. It's all original. Stock is original and story of being in a tank is a great possibility. Keep? Shoot? Sell?

I have no idea who your so called EXPERT is but the stock is WRONG for the Underwood and has been changed. When someone such as wtmr said the stock is wrong you can take it to the bank it is. The man has been collecting carbines longer then you have been breathing. He is one of the very few I would consider to be a real expert in the M1 carbine.

I appreciate everyone's advise. I'm sure wtmr has been wrong and my expert has been wrong in the past. Nobody knows everything. I respect everyone's opinion.

Finding and "ORIGINAL" from the factory Underwood with a "Winchester" stock is like buying a "BRAND NEW" Chevy with a "Ford" motor!!!!!!!!!! GK

Just for history: The main medium Tank M4 Sherman was usualy equipped with one M1928A1 Thompson smg and later in the war with one M3 smg, stored in the turret. The tank crew personally was equipped with TSMG's or M3. Some tanks were modified with racks to store smg's for each of the five crew members. In 1944 a medium tank battalion was equipped with 437 M3 smg's and 240 M1 Carbines. (Source: Table of Organization and Equipment No. 17-25, War Department, Nov 18 1944). Some other reports indicating that there was a change in late 1944. For example a tank platoon commander was equipped with a M1 Carbine and some tank commanders were equipped with smg's and others with M1 Carbines.
By the way stevemachnick. It could be that your carbine was stripped for cleaning during service, and then some stocks were accidentally interchanged. But, congratulation to your nice Underwood.

Your expert needs lessons. No Winchester stock is original to that carbine. You are conversing with a large number of well known collectors here.

clean up post--It is possible to be a winchester stock as Marlin I believe made some stocks for Winchester and Underwood-that said I have a winchester stock with underwood cartouche that come off a white bag carbine-is a odd ball-the metal finishes look to nice for it to have been bubba'd with much--maybe someone removed the cartouche, and maybe it was field replaced with the W stock. It is very nice gun and is worthy of a 400-500 stock and is worthy to just leave it alone as well. In the 60's and 70's and maybe early 80's us shooters did not like all the cartouches on them and removed--I did so my self
