could the M stamped on the bottom of the pistol grip be a proof mark?

No, proof marks were usually "P", sometimes in a circle, sometimes in a square, on the froward part of the pistol grip near the trigger guard. The "M" you describe is not a manufacturer's or rebuild arsenal's mark. It's possibly an armory ID letter or a unit ID designation except they were usually numbers, not letters. Is it on the forward part of the pistol grip where it would be visible when the carbine is stored in an armory rack or is it on the heel?

ON THE HEEL. STOCK ALSO HAS THE SMALL CANNON CARTOUCHE ON RIGHT SIDE, AND A B IN THE SLING WELL. NO ARSENAL REBUILD MARKS.

I can be one of a dozen different things. There is no known answer to your question. It could be someone playing with a stamp in a company armory even.
