rhineriver1, The barrel band is a true T-2 and is unmarked, which is correct according to Reisch.
Tuna, The rear sight is not staked. I came across this carbine at a gun show where an "elderly" gentleman (20 years older than my 63) was asking a dealer about its value. He made the comment he'd never sell it. I admired his gun and invited him to look at my carbines. When he came over, I gave it a through inspection. The rear sight was on backwards. He said after he bought in the 60's he put a scope mount on for a time. When he took it off he put the sight on backwards. I removed it with a sight tool and turned it around. I believe the mark on the left side of the rear sight was something he did when he changed the sight, but I could be wrong.
We developed a friendship and one day he told me he'd sell the Rock-Ola to me, he knew I liked it and his son didn't want it. I jumped on it like a duck on a June bug.
Yup the rear sight has been staked in on the left side. Not the type of staking one finds from an adjustable rear sight but on that was used on type 1 rear sights. Not normally found on the left side as the staking made with a chisel was to prevent the sight from coming out on the right side of the dovetail. The dovetail is tapered towards the left side so the sight gets tighter as it goes in from the right side. The sight itself has seen better days for sure. Looks like someone took a hammer to it. Not much you can do about that except try to find one in better shape.
The barrel band does not look quite right in your photos. It has the appearance of a cut down type 3 band. I wonder if that is what Rhineriver was asking about too?
I'd never seen left-side staking so I assumed it was damaged when he removed the sight. The photo of the barrel band does look like it has been cut. Something I couldn't see with just my eyes. I'll take a closer look and maybe get some more pix. Thanks for the good comments.
The barrel band is a type 2 and not a cut down type 3. I think the rear sight is not original to the carbine as your carbine was just about 12000 from the very end of production. These most likely would have had adjustable rear sights installed. If there are stake marks on the right side just under the flip sight then it had an adjustable rear sight to start with. Oh and the BR marked sights were only used about the middle of Rock-Ola's production.
