Ok, not that knowledgeable so I need some help. Traded into an Underwood today, real mix master +. Serial number is 4046XXX which I think is made sometime between July '43 and then early '44??? Kind of confusing from the little info I can gather. Barrel is an Underwood and marked either 3-44 or 8-44, the first number is hard to see. Did they make barrels as late as August? Bolt is an IBM, trigger housing is Saginaw (SG), hammer is ?? Looks like KR? Rear sight is SA, front sight is marked RIA on the side. Barrel band is marked MMQ. On the back of the receiver is some sort of mark but cannot make it out, looks like a circle? or maybe just an oops? Only mark on the stock is SA (Springfield). No mark on the 2 rivet hand guard. Action is a bit loose in the stock. Did not feel like breaking it down further at this time. Off the bat I am tempted to replace the rear sight with either a milled or even a flip, not worried about collecting just want the look, my Inland has a later milled sight already and I would like to read the Underwood when I fondle it. Have not shot her yet, bore does look good.

I know enough not to post more then a couple of pics so here is an album in photobucket.

Cali your new Underwood would date to September 1943. The barrel could be 3 or 8-44. After Underwood finished off their contract to make carbines, they received a contract to make replacement barrels which went into at least September 1944 so a barrel date 8-44 is a real Underwood barrel. Just a replacement done during the rebuild on your carbine. The hammer marked KR would be one made for Rock-Ola. If that mark on the back of the receiver is on the bevel it's a flaming bomb stamp most often found on Underwood's.

Thanks Tuna, It is on the bevel and I was thinking flaming bomb also but pretty worn or reparked and partially filled. I think the barrel is an 8 and not a 3, either way it is a replacement barrel.

chances are that the bomb on the bevel was just lightly struck. Many were.
